Winvic Appointed to Deliver Highways Infrastructure for Weyside Urban Village Regeneration
Winvic Construction Ltd has been awarded a significant contract by Guildford Borough Council to deliver a comprehensive package of highways infrastructure works as part of the transformative Weyside Urban Village project. This landmark regeneration initiative will bring 1,550 new homes including a substantial proportion of affordable housing to the area, alongside public green spaces, employment land, a commercial centre, and an integrated sustainable transport hub.
The highways programme commenced in May 2025 and is set to be delivered in ten phases over an 18-month period. The scope of work includes road widening, roundabout reconfiguration, signalisation improvements, residential parking bays, and the installation of a new toucan crossing. The initial phase, now underway, involves constructing the toucan crossing on Woking Road, replacing an existing uncontrolled pedestrian route. This upgrade will allow pedestrians and cyclists to cross safely and simultaneously, with completion expected by August 2025.
To support sustainable mobility and reduce traffic congestion, the scheme incorporates dedicated bus lanes and an extensive network of new footpaths and cycleways. Strategic connectivity enhancements are also planned through upgrades to the on and off ramps linking the A3 and A320, improving access across Guildford and surrounding areas.
Winvic has been actively engaged on the Weyside Urban Village site since early 2024, delivering enabling infrastructure to prepare the site for future development. This includes the formation of housing plateaus, earthworks remediation involving approximately 34,000m³ of material, and the installation of 4,500 metres of foul, storm, and private drainage systems, including attenuation and sustainable drainage solutions (SuDS). Internal roads and footpaths totalling 670 metres and 1,300 metres respectively are also being constructed, all fully integrated with tactile crossing points to enhance accessibility.
In alignment with Guildford Borough Council’s long-term community vision, Winvic is delivering a series of social value initiatives. These include creating local employment and training opportunities, supporting STEM education through collaboration with the Surrey Careers Hub, and leading community engagement projects through staff volunteering programmes.
Rob Cook, Managing Director for Civils & Infrastructure at Winvic, stated:
“We are pleased to be working in partnership with Guildford Borough Council on the Weyside Urban Village project. This is a strategically important regeneration scheme that delivers critical infrastructure, unlocks much-needed housing, and supports sustainable development. Our involvement across both on-site and off-site works reflects Winvic’s capability in delivering large-scale, multi-phase civil engineering projects with social value and long-term community impact at their core.”
