UK Construction Sector Set for Major Growth in 2025 with £34 Billion Pipeline

As the UK construction industry steps into 2025, a wave of high-value projects is poised to reshape the nation’s infrastructure landscape. According to new data from Glenigan, the top 100 construction projects starting this year are expected to contribute a combined £34 billion in development value. Civil engineering will take a leading role, with a strong emphasis on sustainable energy, transport infrastructure, and large-scale regeneration.

A key project launching in early 2025 is the High-Speed Two (HS2) High Voltage Power System, valued at £523 million. Located in the West Midlands, this initiative will provide the essential electrical infrastructure for HS2, the UK’s flagship high-speed rail project. The scheme includes the construction of approximately 50 traction substations along the route from London to Crewe, delivering electricity directly from the National Grid to the rail line.

In addition to powering the trains, the project will create a dedicated non-traction high-voltage network to support stations, tunnels, depots, and key operational facilities. In December 2024, Siemens Mobility and Costain secured the £300 million contract to deliver the system, along with a seven-year maintenance agreement to ensure long-term efficiency and performance.

This project is a significant milestone in the delivery of HS2 and represents a critical investment in the UK’s low-carbon transport future. By integrating advanced electrical infrastructure into the network, it supports the government’s broader sustainability and decarbonisation targets.

The HS2 power system is just one of twelve flagship developments highlighted by Construction Wave for 2025. As the year unfolds, these projects will not only stimulate economic activity but also set new benchmarks in innovation, environmental responsibility, and engineering excellence across the UK.
