Sustainability Meets Nutrition: Courteenhall Farm’s Impact on Public Sector Food
Courteenhall Farm in South Northamptonshire recently hosted a delegation from Love British Food as part of a national initiative to promote sustainably farmed British produce within the public sector. The event brought together food professionals and public sector caterers to demonstrate how regenerative farming practices can enhance nutritional quality, support local economies, and align with evolving procurement standards.
Dr Johnny Wake, who assumed management of Courteenhall twelve years ago after a career in medicine, has successfully transitioned the family farm into a leading example of regenerative agriculture. Recognised as the British Farming Awards Sustainable Farmer of the Year 2024, Dr Wake prioritises soil health, biodiversity, and water conservation, integrating cutting-edge technology with traditional methods such as raising native Hereford cattle and rare breed livestock.
During the farm visit, delegates gained valuable insights into the link between sustainable farming and the nutritional value of British food. Dr Wake emphasised the importance of ethical, locally sourced produce in supporting the wellbeing of students, patients, and communities across the public sector.
Courteenhall Farm also cultivates high-quality cereals and legumes, supplying local food producers and contributing to a sustainable, circular food system. Looking ahead, the farm will launch The Knot, a farm shop and café scheduled to open in Spring 2026, designed to showcase British produce and exemplify responsible land stewardship.
Alexia Robinson, founder of Love British Food, noted that the visit has further empowered caterers to increase the inclusion of British-grown ingredients in their menus, supporting compliance with forthcoming Government Buying Standards for sustainable procurement. This event marked the tenth in Love British Food’s changemaker farm visit programme, which has engaged over 200 public sector food professionals to date.
The collaboration between Love British Food and Food for Life underscores a shared commitment to advancing high-quality, sustainable food in schools, hospitals, and care settings, ensuring nutrition and environmental responsibility remain central to public sector food provision.
