REALB Urges Real Estate Agents to Reinforce Ethical Standards Amid Rising Complaints

The Real Estate Agents Licensing Board (REALB) has issued a strong reminder to real estate professionals across Fiji to uphold the highest ethical and professional standards. In a recent talanoa session, Compliance and Monitoring Officer Meenal Lal disclosed that the Board has received 24 complaints so far this year, with the majority relating to unprofessional conduct, misuse of client funds, and failure to meet disclosure obligations.

Lal stressed the critical importance of ensuring that clients fully understand the terms and conditions of the documents they sign during property transactions. She encouraged agents to take the time to clearly explain all relevant details, helping clients make informed decisions and avoid potential misunderstandings.

A key issue raised during the session was the non-disclosure of personal interests in property listings handled by agents within their own agencies. Lal reminded practitioners of their legal obligation under Section 56 of the Real Estate Agents Act to disclose any such conflicts of interest using the prescribed forms (Form 15 and Form 16).

Registrar Peni Komainavoka reinforced the message by emphasizing the responsibility agents have to act with transparency and integrity. He highlighted the importance of empowering clients to make well-informed decisions in what is often their most significant financial investment.

REALB is calling on agents to demonstrate professionalism and ethical conduct in every transaction while encouraging clients to actively engage throughout the process by asking questions and seeking clarification.

Ultimately, REALB’s message underscores that maintaining integrity is fundamental to sustaining trust in Fiji’s real estate industry and fostering a healthy, transparent property market for all stakeholders.
