Orbex to Provide Important Update on Sutherland Spaceport Project
Orbex has invited the local community to attend a public meeting on Monday, June 16 at 7 pm at the Kyle Centre in Tongue to share the latest developments regarding the paused Sutherland Spaceport project.
In December, Orbex announced it would pause construction at the A’ Mhoine site near Tongue, choosing instead to launch initial missions from SaxaVord in Shetland. Despite this shift, the company emphasizes that Sutherland remains its long-term “home port,” highlighting its ongoing commitment to the area.
The last community liaison meeting in January raised many questions from residents eager to understand what the pause means for the project’s future. With no new construction plans yet, this upcoming meeting offers an important opportunity for Orbex to provide clarity and hear directly from the community.
The agenda includes a project update from Orbex and a presentation by the University of Northumbria, focusing on the growing role of small satellites in the space industry. The liaison group’s twice-yearly meetings ensure open dialogue between Orbex, the community, contractors, and the future Launch Site Operator.
While construction remains on hold, the Sutherland Spaceport project continues to represent a significant opportunity for the region not only economically but as a gateway to Scotland’s participation in the expanding space sector. This meeting will be a valuable chance for residents to stay informed and engaged as the project evolves.
