Green is the New Gold: How Newport World Resorts is Redefining Luxury through Sustainability
In the heart of Manila, luxury is undergoing a radical transformation. At Newport World Resorts, the concept of indulgence is no longer measured by opulence alone but by purpose, responsibility, and long-term impact. As the Philippines’ first integrated lifestyle and entertainment hub, Newport is pioneering a new model of hospitality where sustainability and sophistication walk hand in hand.
Setting a New Standard
“At Newport, we believe that true luxury must also serve a greater good,” said Bruce Winton, General Manager of Marriott Manila and Chairman of the “I Love Earth” campaign. This flagship initiative underpins the resort’s environmental, social, and governance (ESG) strategy, embedding green principles into every aspect of operations from hotel rooms to rooftop solar panels.
What began as a passionate advocacy has evolved into a full-scale transformation. The “I Love Earth” campaign now acts as the guiding framework for all sustainability programs across the Newport property. “We’re not just making changes for today, we’re building a model that future generations can be proud of,” Winton emphasized.
A Certified Commitment
Newport’s dedication is more than symbolic. For the third consecutive year, the property has achieved the prestigious EarthCheck Silver Certification, a globally recognized benchmark for sustainability in the travel and tourism industry. This accolade reflects Newport’s commitment to meeting and consistently upholding rigorous standards in energy usage, waste management, social responsibility, and cultural sensitivity.
But the journey wasn’t without challenges. “We had to completely rethink and redesign many of our legacy operational practices,” Winton explained. From eliminating single-use plastics to switching to renewable energy sources, every decision was aimed at building a sustainable ecosystem that supports both the environment and the business.
Sustainable in Style
Newport’s eco-luxury strategy extends to the smallest details. Hotel guests may notice bulk-sized dispensers replacing tiny toiletry bottles, or reusable glasses instead of single-use plastic small shifts that deliver a big impact. Even staff uniforms are part of the mission, crafted from recycled plastic blended with traditional fabrics.
In its restaurants, the switch to biodegradable takeaway materials and the innovative BoomGrow machine farm producing vegetables with 95% less resources demonstrate how sustainability can also elevate quality and freshness.
Meanwhile, solar panels now adorn the resort’s rooftops, pushing the property closer to its goal of running on 100% renewable energy. It’s a bold, forward-thinking move that reflects Newport’s vision of future-proofing its operations through climate-conscious investments.
People First, Always
Beyond environmental efforts, Newport is investing in the people who bring the resort to life. The newly launched Academy for Leisure & Tourism (ALT) represents a long-term commitment to the Filipino workforce, offering world-class training in hospitality, culinary arts, and gaming entertainment. This initiative not only enriches careers but reinforces the resort’s role as a catalyst for national development.
A Vision for the Future
“What we’ve learned,” Winton noted, “is that sustainability and profitability aren’t at odds. In fact, they support each other. Sustainable practices protect our business, reduce risk, and create meaningful value for everyone involved.”
Newport World Resorts is proving that going green isn’t just an ethical choice it’s the ultimate expression of luxury in the 21st century. With every solar panel, upcycled uniform, and empowered staff member, it’s clear: the future of hospitality is both elegant and enduringly green.
