Aldi Targets Ponteland for Strategic Store Expansion in Northumberland

Aldi has announced plans to expand its presence in Northumberland, identifying Ponteland as a key priority area for a new store location. This move forms part of the supermarket’s wider UK growth strategy, which includes a £650 million investment in 2025 and a long-term goal of operating 1,500 stores nationwide.

The decision follows a nationwide public consultation in which thousands of people were invited to suggest potential store locations. Ponteland emerged as a standout recommendation, highlighting strong community demand for Aldi’s blend of quality and affordability.

Currently operating over 1,050 stores across the UK, Aldi will open 10 new locations this summer alone, including sites in Caterham, Sheffield, and Fulham Broadway. The proposed expansion into Ponteland represents a continued commitment to increasing access to budget-friendly grocery options in underserved areas.

The retailer is actively seeking a site capable of housing a 20,000 sq ft store with approximately 100 parking spaces. Key requirements include proximity to a main road, strong visibility, and ease of access criteria designed to ensure maximum convenience for customers.

“We want to make high-quality, affordable food accessible to everyone, and that means opening new stores in the communities that need them most,” said Jonathan Neale, Managing Director of National Real Estate at Aldi UK. “The public’s input has played a vital role in guiding our site selection process.”

In addition to standard-format stores, Aldi is also expanding its Aldi Local model in Central London, targeting more compact spaces suited to urban environments. Together, these initiatives reflect the supermarket’s ongoing commitment to serving diverse communities across the UK.
