Pride in Progress: UK’s First LGBTQ+ Majority Housing Breaks Ground in Manchester
In a bold and inspiring step forward for inclusive living, construction has begun on the UK’s first majority LGBTQ+ housing scheme right in the heart of South Manchester. Timed perfectly with Pride Month, the groundbreaking marks a powerful statement of progress, community, and care for older LGBTQ+ residents.
The pioneering project, led by Great Places in partnership with Manchester City Council, the LGBT Foundation, and the Russell Road Community Steering Group, will deliver 120 new homes. These include 80 socially rented apartments for over-55s and 40 affordable shared ownership homes purposefully designed to meet the unique needs of older LGBTQ+ individuals who often face isolation and housing discrimination.
But this development is more than just homes, it’s a vibrant, supportive community. Plans include welcoming shared lounges, wellness treatment rooms, and beautifully landscaped gardens. And with a net gain in trees and greenery, it’s set to be as environmentally nurturing as it is socially inclusive.
“This is a real milestone moment,” said Cllr Gavin White. “Older LGBTQ+ people deserve safe, welcoming spaces to grow older with dignity and this project is delivering exactly that.”
Alison Dean, Chief Executive of Great Places, added: “We’re proud to be leading this groundbreaking initiative. It’s a first for the UK and we hope it inspires more inclusive housing across the country.”
Set to complete by summer 2027, this trailblazing project doesn’t just build homes, it builds hope, belonging, and a more compassionate future for all.
