Brampton and Zenobē Launch Landmark CA$4 Billion Zero-Emission Transit Initiative

The City of Brampton, in collaboration with the U.K.-based fleet electrification leader Zenobē, has announced a landmark CA$4 billion initiative to transition Brampton’s public transit system to a fully electric fleet. As one of the largest zero-emission bus (ZEB) programs in North America, the project will see the deployment of 1,000 electric buses over the next decade, with infrastructure set to be operational by early 2027.

This major public-private partnership is designed to deliver long-term environmental, social, and economic benefits. By replacing diesel buses with electric alternatives, the city aims to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions, improve local air quality, and enhance the transit experience for more than 40 million annual passengers. The initiative will also attract over CA$1 billion in foreign investment, further strengthening Canada–U.K. economic relations.

Zenobē will provide comprehensive end-to-end electrification solutions, including infrastructure planning, charging technology, software integration, and financial modelling. With experience supporting over 2,000 electric vehicles across more than 120 depots worldwide, Zenobē brings global expertise to help Brampton efficiently and cost-effectively reach its sustainability targets.

The project emphasizes local economic development through the procurement of electric buses from Canadian suppliers and the creation of thousands of skilled jobs. It represents a significant opportunity to build technical expertise and green infrastructure capacity within the Greater Toronto Area and beyond.

Senior officials from both countries have praised the initiative. U.K. Consul-General Fouzia Younis described it as a model of international collaboration, while Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown called it a defining moment for the city’s public transit future positioning Brampton as a national leader in sustainable urban transport.

This strategic investment not only marks a major advancement in fleet electrification but also sets a new benchmark for municipal sustainability projects. The Brampton–Zenobē partnership serves as a compelling blueprint for other cities aiming to transition to zero-emission transportation through innovative, cross-border cooperation.
