Demolition of 1960s Coventry Housing Estate Begins as Part of £120m Regeneration Project
A major regeneration initiative is now underway in Coventry as demolition begins on three 1960s tower blocks Kerry, Milestone, and Trafalgar Houses in Spon End. Led by social housing provider Citizen, the £120 million project marks the start of a long-anticipated transformation of the estate, which had fallen into disrepair.
The first phase of the development will replace 158 vacant homes with 262 modern, affordable flats, with a total of 750 new homes planned across three phases, subject to planning approval. Demolition had originally been scheduled to begin in spring 2023 but was delayed until Coventry City Council granted final approval last June.
The tower blocks, once symbols of post-war progress, were deemed outdated and costly to maintain. In recent years, they also served as filming locations for BBC dramas such as This Town, My Name is Leon, and Phoenix Rise.
At the launch of the demolition, West Midlands Mayor Richard Parker described the project as a key step in tackling the region’s housing challenges. He emphasized the need to replace “insecure and expensive” homes with high-quality, energy-efficient housing that can support stronger communities.
Citizens have committed to ensuring the new development meets modern standards for sustainability and livability. The project is seen as a model for future regeneration schemes across the West Midlands, addressing both housing supply and community development.
