Ford Ditches Ambitious EV Tech Project Amid Soaring Costs and Delays
Detroit, MI, Ford has canceled its highly anticipated FNV4 electric vehicle architecture project, aimed at streamlining vehicle software and competing with Tesla. The decision comes after escalating costs and delays, with sources revealing that the initiative couldn’t overcome financial hurdles.
FNV4 was designed to be the “brain” of Ford’s cars, integrating advanced software for both electric and gasoline models. Led by former Apple and Tesla executive Doug Field, the program was expected to drive innovation, but mounting challenges led Ford to pivot.
Instead of FNV4, Ford will focus on its existing software systems, drawing on lessons learned from the failed project. The company will also continue to invest in its California-based “skunkworks” team tasked with creating affordable electric vehicles and advanced tech.
This move highlights the difficulties legacy automakers face in catching up to Tesla’s software-driven edge. With rising competition in the EV market, Ford’s shift away from FNV4 may reshape its strategy to stay relevant.
